Brett grew up in Springfield, Illinois, obtained his undergraduate degree in Economics (department honors) from the University of Illinois in Champaign and his Law degree (Summa Cum Laude) from Loyola University of Chicago. Brett and his family have lived in DeKalb for 25 years.

Brett was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1992 and to the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois, in 1993. He practiced law for 13 years in DeKalb, Sycamore and nearby communities, working on a broad range of transactional and litigation matters, while developing concentrations in business organizations, acquisitions and transactions, commercial real estate and development, secured lending and local government matters for cities, park districts and housing authorities.

For 10 years, Brett worked in executive management roles for private and municipal corporations, serving first as the Executive Director of the DeKalb County Housing Authority and subsequently as Chief Operating Officer and in-house counsel for the Forge Resources Group. Brett’s experience in industry and the public sector gives him insight into the legal and operational needs of business, non-profit and government clients.

Brett’s work has included legislative advocacy in the State Capital and Washington D.C. on behalf of private and municipal clients. He has experience with public-private technology commercialization and fiber optic network development. He has represented clients in dozens of business acquisitions, sales and expansions.

Throughout his time in the community, Brett has volunteered service in support of policy and economic development, education and social services.
